Recently, the internet was agog\r\nwith youths scouring their Facebook pages for throwback pictures to join in the\r\n#10YearsChallenge. It was interesting to see how much we have all changed in\r\nsuch a short while. Have you noticed that people aren\u2019t just changing? The\r\nlandscape of the world we live in has also changed drastically. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Some jobs are being revamped\r\ncompletely and others are obsolete. One prevailing change we have enjoyed so\r\nfar is the shift towards the freelance economy; the gig workplace. Millennials,\r\nyoung and old, are ditching conventional degrees and jobs for freelance jobs\r\nlike photography, web development, and content creation. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This article goes into detail about the changes caused by millennials and how you can be a part of this revolution.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What are the Changes Caused by Millennials?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Here, the ways that millennials\r\nhave changed the conventional workforce through freelance work will be\r\nexamined. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. Drive vs Degree<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Millennials are proof that a degree or educational qualification does not dictate your career path. Many individuals have begun working as freelancers in the fields in which they have an interest. Some of these freelance jobs include photography<\/a>, writing<\/a>, baking<\/a>, and graphic design<\/a>. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Most of these jobs are motivated\r\nby passion and interest. Significantly, this is a far cry from a time when a\r\ndegree was needed to work a conventional 9 to 5 job.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2. \r\nWorking Remotely<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is one way that millennials\r\nhave unarguably changed the regular workforce. It is important to note that\r\nwhile telecommuting has been used since the 1950s, technological advances have\r\nmade working remotely even more popular and convenient. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Millennials can either be employed as full-time employees who work remotely or act as freelancers who provide their services from their home. Working from home<\/a> has become even more convenient now that freelancers can receive orders, payments and deliver services online.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3. Turning side gigs into full-time jobs<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Millennials have begun to destroy\r\nthe status quo where certain jobs were identified as a side gig. Now, even the\r\nmost unlikely job has been made a full-time job and career path by\r\nfreelancers.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jobs such as social media\r\nmanagement and content creation exemplify an instance where an individual can\r\nwork on his own terms and for multiple people at the same time. By doing this,\r\nthe individual can successfully turn a side job into a full-time job while\r\nenjoying independence. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

4. Networking for growth<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The conventional 9 to 5 worker\r\nclocks in when due and goes home when the workday ends. The freelancer, on the\r\nother hand, is on a continuous search for growth and an opportunity to market\r\ntheir services.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In this sense, millennials have\r\nchanged how the workforce operates. This is because, some freelancers have\r\nbecome expert networkers to ensure their clientele and partnerships grow.  Using social media apps and networking sites,\r\nmillennials are able to collaborate with themselves and share knowledge to\r\nensure continued growth of the freelance economy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This networking culture is not as\r\npopular in a conventional workforce where employees are trying to be noticed or\r\nin competition with each other. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

5. Pride in your craft<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The freelancing workforce is\r\npopulated with millennials who to a great extent value creativity and\r\nshowmanship. For this reason, while the conventional and older workforce did\r\ntheir assigned jobs and went home, freelancers tend to go the extra mile. This\r\nis because, millennials place a certain pride in the jobs they do.  Hence, a large number of people hire freelancers for their creativity, productivity, and passion for their jobs and craft. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Overall, we can see that millennials have played a role in the evolution of the conventional workforce and growth of the freelance workforce. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
