Photography is no longer what it used to be, especially in Nigeria. The fame accrued by popular icons like Kelechi Amadi, TY\r\nBello, and Yetunde Ayeni-Babaeko are enough reasons to believe that photography\r\nis the next best thing in Nigeria. These people have followers all around the\r\nglobe and they have successfully taken their craft outside the shores of the\r\ncountry. However, a closer look at the industry reveals a stark difference\r\nbetween the upper class and the lower class. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We have these photographers who make more than they can ever\r\nget to spend, and others who can barely afford their next meal. Considering the\r\nfact that the barrier to entry is ridiculously low, we have a lot of people who\r\npose as photographers, yet, they have nothing to show for it. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why don\u2019t they succeed? Well, that\u2019s the topic to be\r\ndiscussed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why very few succeed at Photography in Nigeria<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There are many reasons for this debacle, and we\u2019re going to\r\nlist the most pressing issues. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. The People Aren\u2019t Yet Receptive to the Industry\u2019s Boom<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is a fact that many photographers have come to terms\r\nwith. When you consider the cost of getting a quality camera, the effort that\r\ngoes into proper editing, among many other factors, the pay an average\r\nphotographer should receive is obviously on the high side. But then, we have\r\nmany die-hards who still view photographers with their lenses from the 90s.\r\nThese people usually say, \u201cIsn\u2019t it just to snap my picture?\u201d \u201cSomething I can\r\ndo with my phone!\u201d \u201cJunior, come and snap us.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is ironic, isn\u2019t it? These people who are experts at\r\nmaking people look better than they are actually aren\u2019t adept at doing the same\r\nthing for themselves. Why do you think this is so? The student who buys textbooks, the co-worker who attends\r\nconferences, etc. tend to do better, don\u2019t they? Well, the photographer who\r\nputs in more effort too is bound to thrive. Even though it isn\u2019t as\r\nstraightforward as it appears, the fact remains the same. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

  1. Invest in your craft. Buy the best lenses, the\r\nbest cameras, attend trainings, etc.<\/li>
  2. Go the extra mile when you\u2019re promoting\r\nyourself. A collaboration with an established brand will help.<\/li>
  3. Do not settle for less. Rumors fly by quickly,\r\nyou don\u2019t want to become that photographer who will always do the job for less.<\/li>
  4. Maximize social media to the fullest. <\/li><\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
